Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
